THEME: Islamic Theocracy and Modernism: Issues and Challenges
The most widespread struggle in the world today is arguably the attempt to enthrone Islamic theocracy in various degrees, with varying strategies, targeting various extents of territorial reach with different levels of cultural heterogeneity. The tendency is being driven by a nostalgia for the golden era of Islam, the desire to resist the dominance of the West and its unipolar world-view as well as the quest of certain Muslim individuals for political power, among other factors. Nigeria has a fair share of the struggle for Islamic theocracy on its territory with grave consequences. Debates are raging among Muslims of different hues and tendencies about the desirability and sustainability of pristine Islamic theocracy in the contemporary world. Much as the desire of Muslims to live according to the Shariah of Islam is unassailable as it is their fundamental human right, the world is yet to reach a consensus on the context for the exercise of this right. This is what makes Islamic theocracy problematic. While it may be conceivable that an Islamic theocracy can be democratically elected in a Muslim majority country, what becomes of it in a Muslim minority country? What are the possible challenges of enthroning Islamic theocracy along with modern democracy?Clear option is to review the atavistic conception of Islamic theocracy with a view to generating its variants that are capable of universal application. Nigeria’s experience with sharia application in its multicultural andmulti religious environment offers a credible platform for moving forward the debate onapplicability of Islamic theocracy in the contemporary world.
