2017 CONFERENCE ON ISLAM IN NIGERIA

CALL FOR PAPERS

Since immediately after her independence, Nigeria has continually faced an existential problem which led to a civil war barely seven years after. Although the civil war ended over four decades ago, the disunity which engendered it has failed to disappear and has even aggravated in some cases. The disunity has now permeated virtually every segment of society. While the cliche often touted is that Nigeria's unity is not negotiable, there is palpable fear in all quarters that the country could disintegrate at the slightest snap. The consequences of disunity for Nigeria are dire, hence the need for concerted efforts to build a truly united country.

One of the consequences of present Nigeria's trajectory is that it has caused disunity even among Muslims. But since Islam compels unity among Muslims it is expected a little determined and focused effort is all that is required to forge Muslim unity in Nigeria. The question that remains is: Can Nigeria leverage on the unity of Muslims to achieve national unity? The proposed conference will provide scholarly answers to this question.
